Motif of a Žejane bell-ringer, whose origin is Žejane, a cattle-breeding area close to Rijeka. A constant and one of the first participants of the Rijeka International Carnival and a recognisable symbol of Rijeka. It represents the Bell-ringer in his characteristic costume. Žajane bell-ringers are recognisable for their hat called kumarak, which is decorated with colourful ribbons bajeri which reach to their legs. The top of the hat is decorated with paintings of love motifs which are surrounded by many small neck-ties (fjok). On the top of the hat are two flowers “rože”. The Žejane bell-ringers uniform also includes white trousers, black shoes, a sailors T-shirt on which there are two white handkerchiefs. The sheep’s skin “šuba” is made of two parts of which one is posed on the back, and the other around the waist on which there are three bells, known as “klopote”. In his hand he is holding a bottle. On the day of the Biblical Three Wise Men, the bell-ringers ring and mark the start of Shrove-tide which lasts until Ash-Wednesday.
